Thank you Etowah Valley H.S. I want to tell you how thankful I am. Ten years ago my husband left my daughter and I christmas of 1998 for another woman, I had not seen or talked to him until Feb. of 2008, I got a phone call that he was very ill with cancer and in ICU in Tennessee. I dropped everything and ran to his side. (I live in PA), Anyway, This past year has not been good for me. I had to put my Great Dane to sleep, broke my heart. I still think every day if there was something more I could do to keep her alive. She was 14 years old. Then in Aug 2008 I lost Pat to a heart attack. We were together for 8 years and to be married. my whole world had been turned upside down, and I felt so alone. I had been looking on pet finder but I did not know what specific breed of dog I was looking for. I was just looking for a pet to be my friend, my family member, someone to love. I found a couple of dogs I emailed about but got nothing back for emails, then I found "Blinky". There was just something about her. I emailed the shelter and left it to GOD. I got a email back , Blinky was due to be put down! and Donna said they brought her over to their shelter to find her a home. I got the email on Thursday and Friday night I hit the road! Drove all the way to Cartersville, GA from Stroudsburg, PA. All the way I thought "what am I doing? I do not know anything about her what if she hates me, or does not like my cat?" But I prayed and just had a gut feeling!
I made it to the shelter one hour before they opened. Even though they were not open they brought her out to me, She came out that door and my world was put back together! ( yes, I started to cry!!!) She was the one! She came right to us! Kissing us, as if she knew. We named her Daisy Mai. we stopped and got her a spa bath and drove the 14 hours home. She was not sure when we got home of the snow, but yesterday it was snowing again and she ran and played in the snow. putting her nose in the snow and throwing it up in the air. She likes to watch the deer and wild turkey. She is so happy. She has been a blessing. She is so good and my 10 year old cat and her are best buds! they love each other and follow each other every where. From the second Daisy Mai walked in the door they kissed and have not left each others side, and my cat is scared of other dogs! People say I saved her, But I disagree, Daisy Mai saved me. She was sent to me from heaven and the angels at the Etowah Valley H.S. and Petfinder. Thank you for this wonderful website! I wish I could save them all. I would love to start and run a no kill shelter here in Stroudsburg, PA. The SPCA here closed last month, and now we have no SPCA. I want to thank Etowah Valley H. S in Cartersville, GA and all the shelters, foster homes and people who care so much. Thank you for my blessing.

Update #1
Jazz is WONDERFUL, what a sweet, sweet little girl. I'm attaching pictures and you can see she has gotten very comfortable very fast. She has a strong curve to her tail, but could be just not the best conformation breeding and I wonder if her ears may not continue to stiffen because of her age--estimated at 9 months or 10 months. She slept all the way home, she obviously has had a lot of changes the past 24 hours but she is taking it all very well.
When I drove in the yard, my horses were close to the house eating hay, Jazz saw them and hair went up between her shoulders, she gave about 3 or 4 barks (we were still in the truck) to tell them she didn't approve of horses that close to her new house--funny because she had been totally quiet all afternoon until that time. She met about three of my dogs, met my dominant female and not a growl nor raised hair between them--Jazz was still crated but Rosie was loose on the deck. She is just precious, you can see how easy going and sweet she is by her humble eyes, what a nice dog!!!
Update #2
Sweet, sweet, sweet, she is very inquisitive--likes horse feed (all my dogs do), takes her paw and turns her food bowl up on the side, she turned it up like "is that all there is?" so I gave her more and she ate about 1/2 again a feeding--probably about 1 cup of food tonight. Then when she finished he again took her paw and tried to turn her food bowl up on the side or over---guess that is her way of saying "ok, I'm done". She also wanted to turn the horse tubs up on the side too, so she's got a thing for pawing at a tub that is empty or she has finished eating out of. She is really cute, a total lap dog, I sat on the grass while the horses were eating and she crawled right into my lap. She and Pepper have gotten acquainted and they are fine, even Rosie likes her and she is more dominant by far than Pepper. Deuce likes her too, that's good since she is crated right between Pepper and Deuce.
Update #3
She is precious--such a lovebug, sweetest little face just full of gentleness and loving. Her fur is VERY soft and lush--you can just sink your hands into her fur, there's a lot of black under her coat of white so I think as she matures she will darken up with her mottles, she's a beautiful dog and wonderful personality. She likes to investigate everything with her paw--she's right-pawed, takes that paw and puts it in everything, turning up her bowl, turning up the horses' tubs so she can get a better look and licked out every horse tub to make sure they hadn't left anything really good. She ate the pellets of horse feed my mare left--mmmmm good!! She wags her tail everytime I come in sight of her crate. This one will be hard to let go, she a very happy-natured little girl--and she does have a beautiful fan tail--such thick, soft fur, nice!!
In the third picture she is watching the horses, when I drove into the driveway the horses were eating hay at the edge of the yard, she barked 3 or 4 warning barks from her crate in the back seat--"get back, you don't belong near my truck", hair on her shoulders standing on end but when she watched them after getting out in the yard she was just very curious rather than wanting to move in on them. I took her out in the pasture (leashed of course) to pick up feed tubs and she was more interested in what was in the tubs than heeling horses (although she watched them), good girl, Jazz. She's already got a good start to being a velcro dog.
Thanks again!
Christine

We just wanted to give you an update on Teddy, the Sheba Inu mix dog that my daughter, Stefanie Oravits, adopted from your wonderful shelter a few weeks ago.
Teddy is doing wonderful and we are all crazy about him. He has been a joy to all of us and Stefanie is enjoying her new role as Mommy to Teddy. As you know she works for a Veterinarian here in Huntsville so Teddy has been given the Royal treatment with a complete grooming - even his teeth cleaned! He now looks like a show dog and Stefanie is asked about him whereever they go. He is absolutely beautiful with the sweetest personality and everyone at her job loves him as much as she does. Teddy loves to ride in the car and Steff has gotten him a doggie seat belt so he can ride in the back seat with her safely. He seems very happy and he is definately loved by all of us.
Just can't thank you enough again for your wonderful care of Teddy for so many months and for chosing to save his life so that he could fill ours with his wonderful personality. Our hearts will always be grateful to you all.
Enclosing some pics of Teddy and Stefanie!
Hugs from all of us,
Joan Oravits (Teddy's happy Grandma)
Just wanted to say thanks and give an update on a recent adoption. My wife and I adopted our husky named Kodiak (formerly know as Fargo) in May of 2008. Since then he has really filled out and taken on a new life of adventure. He's like an energetic son and has made himself right at home. My wife (who's wasn't really a dog person until now) was recently overheard saying, "I don't know how we got along with out him." Thanks for making this dream come true...for all of us!

I just wanted to let you know how happy I am in my new home. I have a new name too - Brody, which I like much better than Carter since I have decided I am most definitely not a Democrat! :) I love my brothers and sisters and almost all of them (except one cat) like to play with me.
When my Mommy & Daddy came to get me on January 17, my Mommy started crying when she described how she had just lost her furbaby and wanted another lap dog to love. Fortunately, my description sheet fit the bill as it said I was a calm lap dog. Ha ha - little did they know! I maintained that facade for 2 days, until I got the lay of the land at my new home. Once I figured out that my brother Bucky (the white dog in the photo with me) and my sister Cocoa (the red dog who looks like me) would support me in my endeavors, I decided to show Mommy and Daddy my true personality. They laugh because they say I am anything BUT calm. They tell me Ranger, the tuxedo cat, has finally met his match. I chase him all over the house and almost caught him once, but got into trouble because I almost caught him on top of the breakfast table. Mommy says it's bad manners to stand on the table just because the cats can do it. Oh well, I'm still learning the rules around here but there's not many and it's really a fun place to be.
Mommy says she is going to spoil me rotten - I'm not sure what that means exactly but if it has anything to do with me having my own blanket and sleeping in Mommy and Daddy's bed with them, then I say bring it on! She gives me belly pets whenever I want and only laughs when I do something I shouldn't. She's not too upset that I'm not a true lap dog because she understands there's too many things going on around here for me to sit still for very long.
Thanks again for taking care of me until Mommy and Daddy found me. I gotta go because Ranger just ran by and I gotta go practice my new hold on him!

I just wanted to update you on the beautiful long-hair calico, Juliana, that I adopted from you on 12/27/08. We found her at the Acworth PetCo store.
I spoke with one of the society's ladies earlier today, and she asked that I contact you and let you know how she's doing. I changed her name from Juliana to Abbie, and she is doing beautifully. She has a precious personality and loves being around me and my older cat, Tiger, a male tabby. Abbie claimed our house as her home almost immediately! She has had no medical problems whatsoever since I adopted her. She is strictly an inside cat, but I have a large screened porch which she and Tiger enjoy every day. No matter what room I am in, she is there with me. It is beyond my comprehension that someone could give up such a beautiful, loving animal, but since he/she did give her up, I am glad she now belongs to me!
Again, thank you for being so kind to me the day we adopted Juliana/Abbie.
Sincerely,
Mary Ellen Crowe
Holiday Greetings!
I hope you remember me...my name at the shelter was Sasha. It has been an exciting year for be since being adopted by my new family on June 6th. First of all, I received a new name - Charlee. Yes, they know I'm a girl! It took some time for my "older" brother Max to accept me since he was the Top Dog until I arrived. I still drive him crazy at times when all I want to do is play and run around the yard, but we've become best buddies.
They keep telling me how smart I am. My master has taught me several tricks - rollover, shake, "give me ten", play dead, sit and belly up to the kitchen counter for a treat! I may be smart, but I'm also a bit mischievous...I've taken several things (i.e. slippers, shoes, eyeglasses and towels) outside to chew on! My owners have gotten wise and now keep things behind closed doors or in places I can't get to them.
My hair has grown out quite a bit since I left the shelter so I look more like a small Golden Retriever. They brush me even though I don't really enjoy it. I get to go on walks daily but don't walk as nicely as Max does yet. However, my car etiquette is wonderful so I am taken for rides - even though it may be just to get a bath at Petco!
Since we live on a golf course, I'm very busy during the day running up and down the yard keeping golfers away. They keep throwing these hard little white balls in the yard but I always snatch them up and sometimes chew on them. I don't think I should be doing that! After running around outside all day, I'm exhausted and like to settle down around 9. I get to sleep in my own big, comfortable doggie bed alongside my owners. It's so warm and snuggly.
Hope all is well at the shelter and all my furry friends there have found new families as loving as mine. Thank you for taking care of me while I was there - I hope I was a good girl!
Merry Christmas,
Sandra, Tom, Max and Charlee Thaxton.
December 10th, 2008
Merry Christmas!
Hope everyone is doing well. Last time you saw me in August, I weighed 18lbs. I don't weigh that anymore! At last nail trim, I was over 66lbs. Mom's not sure where I am going to stop. She just had to buy me another collar yesterday. My vet just keeps telling me I am going to be a big, big boy. My new teeth have come in. As a result, my toys have to undergo daily surgeries. I have a great new coat for winter and a really cool backyard to play in. I haven't caught a chipmunk yet but I keep digging for them. Riding in the car is the most fun. I love for Dad to take me new places. I'm good at riding in the car. I never meet a stranger. Your description of me was right. I love everything and everybody!
Thanks for taking care of me until I found my folks!
Love,
Bill, Malorie and Kodi Allen.
Hello to everyone at Etowah Valley,
We adopted Rosie from you last year and I can not begin to tell you how much she is loved. She is just the perfect dog; friendly, enthusiastic and loving. My parents and I actually have little battles over whose house she gets to live at. Thank you so much for everything you did for her and for all the other animals you care for.
Sincerely,
Kim Schutte (and Barb and Rick Schutte - they're currently winning the battle!)
Thank you so much for helping us find the perfect pet for our family. We adopted Bear when the Humane Society was in the Animal Control building. When we found him, his head was stuck in between the bars. He's actually very smart. We still aren't quite sure what he is, but we're pretty sure he has Chow Chow in him, maybe some Belgian Tervuren. Every time we walk in the park, people stop to ask us what breed he is. He looks like some exotic breed. He is very loyal, loving, and obedient. We encourage everyone to adopt a shelter pet. They'll love you unconditionally for the rest of their life.
Thank you again. Because of what you are doing, dogs like Bear have a chance at getting a wonderful loving family.

Just checking in with you to let you know how everything's going. Grouchy (now Ceasar) sneezed all the way home on Sat. but otherwise seemed very happy in his carrier for the 6 hr trip home. My vet's open for an hour and a half on Sundays, so I took him in to get some antibiotics for that cold. He also got his rabies shot and his nails trimmed. He was a holy terror at the vet's office. My vet is NOT going to be looking forward to my visits anymore. But Ceasar's been doing really well now. His cold is getting better. I've become his new mommy -- he follows me wherever I go. He's not the type of cat to go hide under the bed, he's always around waiting for a pat. He's very sweet. At least with me he is. He weighs only 6 lbs 4 oz. so we have to fatten him up a bit -- he loves canned cat food. Well, just wanted to let you know everything's going great.
Regards,
Joyce Miezin

We thank you and your staff very much for letting us adopt little Toby (pictures attached). We brought him home on December 3,08, and he has been a joy and a delight from the first moment we had him. He is the cutest and sweetest thing, and we love him very much.
You said he really loves his toys, and that has been the case. On the way home from EVHS we stopped at Pet Smart, and Toby went in with us to help select some new toys. A few weeks later Santa brought him more toys. He even exchanged presents with his new dog friend, River, our son and families' dog. It seems like he always has something in his mouth--- a toy, a chewy bone, or something he is not supposed to have.
We are having one battle with him, and that is who is going to be the alpha dog in the family. We tell him " Toby, you weigh 10 lbs. You are NOT going to be the alpha dog". We bought Cesar's book, and we are making progress on that front.
Best Regards,
Helen and Don Whittier

Thank you so much for allowing us to adopt Sadie (formerly Secret) & Mugsy. They have brought joy & laughter to our home already. They have settled into the family routine seamlessly. They are potty trained, have excellent house manners and sleep through the night. They are loving life with the big back yard, playing & chasing each other. They are warm & comfy on their beds and appear to be very very happy. We can't imagine life without them!
Thank you again!

I am enclosing pictures of "Milk" who was adopted from the PetSmart pet fair in Stamford, Connecticut last December. His name is now "Hudson" after going through a couple of name changes over that weekend! (We live along the Hudson River) He is such a wonderful little guy and has adopted us as his family as well. He is loving and sweet and well-behaved and we couldn't be happier with the decision to take him home and although he is not the dog we came for, he is perfect for our little family.
Hud got used to the puppy pads early on and now (a month later) waits to go outside, although there's the rare accident. As you can see by the pictures, he is happy and loved. We take him to the Hoboken parks often to play with other dog friends and he is super friendly. It was a great experience for my son to find Hudson and Hudson to find my son.
We will possibly be back within a year or so after we move to a bigger space to find a new addition to our family!
Thank you for all your help and kindness.
Amy, Aiden and Hudson Bilyard
We adopted our kitty one year ago from your shelter. She is such a delight, so friendly and very, very affectionate - naps on my chest, follows me around. She so sweet and is just what we wanted.
However, when she first came home she hid from us for a few days, took about 2 weeks to adjust to us - and about 2 months to adjust to strangers. We used treats and put catnip on a blanket to "teach" her to sit in our laps.
It took weeks for her to use the scratching post but the catnip at the bottom did the trick. We just wanted to pass this on in case any of the new owners have shy cats like ours - be patient!
Thanks for all you do.
Sincerely,
Gayle Hall
I just wanted to let you know that Disney (now known as 'Jake') is becoming settled in our home. He and Dusty are getting on quite well; they had a couple of issues that they seem to have worked out but I blame that on Dusty being the older male. They like to chase each other and play musical beds when it is time to sleep. Dusty had two beds; one in the living room and one in the bedroom...now they share.
Jake seems to have been used for hunting or tracking...he chased two opossums up a tree at 4:30 this morning and wouldn't come in...I had to go out and physically carry him into the house. We are teaching Jake several tricks and he catches on rather quickly; Dusty sits near him and will automatically do the trick since he has already learned them. Maybe Jake will see what Dusty does and learn faster! He tends to pull on the lead when we walk, but I know that he is just trying to follow the scents that he picks up with his nose constantly to the ground.
We are very pleased with Jake and know that in time he will really feel 'at home' with us. He wasn't too sure on Friday when I took him to our Vet for a check...he trembled when I buckled him into the harness and seat-belt, but once we went into the clinic, he seemed to settle down. Overall, he is in good health, just a case of whip worms which he is being treated for. I thought I should let you know, since it is possible that all the dogs will have this.
Thanks for everything you do to help find forever homes for stray/abandoned dogs and cats! Too bad more people aren't willing or able to open their homes to a furry baby! The unconditional love makes it all worthwhile!
As always,
Sharon, Lou, Dusty & Jake

When I first saw the picture of EV-F-306 in February 2008, I was still grieving for my Zeus, who I had adopted at eight weeks old, and who had passed away six months earlier, at the age of thirteen-and-a-half. I missed having a furry companion terribly, but my heart still felt like getting another dog would be a some sort of indefinable betrayal of Zeus' memory. Since I was sure that a dog as striking and unusual as EV-F-306 would have been long since adopted by the time I saw her picture, I figured it wouldn't hurt to inquire about her. Imagine my surprise when I received an email from Dorothy, who told me she was still available, and would be eligible for an out-of-state adoption. In what was one of my more impetuous decisions, I decided to go get her, Dorothy made all the necessary arrangements, I called my mom, and we were off on a ten-hour road trip to Georgia. When we arrived, we were greeted by helpful and friendly shelter staff and a big bundle of fur.
Deciding to take a chance on EV-F-306, now called Zooey, was one of the best decisions I could have made. She needed us -- to help her get over her pathological fear of cars and traffic, and to give her a loving home -- and we needed her, to have a baby girl to spoil, and to fill the void left in our lives after Zeus passed away.
It's almost a year later, now, and our fuzzy baby girl is no longer afraid of cars or traffic. Zooey is always first out the door to go on walks, and she knows that -- no matter what scary thing they meant in the past -- car trips now mean things like peanut butter mailmen from Petsmart, or a trip to Grammy's and Poppy's to chase squirrels and to lounge in the sun. She's a wonderful, loving dog whose antics we always enjoy, who is wonderful with the kids in our extended family, and who we can't imagine being without.
Zooey is truly a "rescue dog" -- she rescued me from my grief as much as we rescued her from homelessness. Though we'll always miss Zeus, we're grateful to again have a furry whirlwind of joyfulness in our lives, and we know that -- as one loving shelter dog, to another -- Zeus would certainly approve.
Thanks so much to all of you, especially Dorothy, for all your help in making Zooey a part of our family.
Best,
Nicole and Erik
We hope you are enjoying your holidays and that your trip back to Georgia from Connecticut went well. We want to give you an update on Faith. First off, we have chosen a new name for her - "Molly". She has adapted to her new home very nicely. To say she is not a barker is an understatement. We didn't hear a sound from her for the first several days and she really only barks when she is playing with us. We actually hear her snoring more than barking.
We had our first snow fall on Dec. 19 and she wasn't quite sure what to make of it. She really only likes to go to the bathroom on the grass so we made sure we cleared an area of grass of the snow so it would be easier for her but with additional snow overnight and blowing that didn't last long. It took her a few times to realize if she really had to go it would have to be on top of the snow. Most of the snow is now gone for now so she is back to exploring her surroundings. She loves to go for rides in the car and for walks. She has found a few different spots in the house for her lounging. She loves to lay on either a blanket or pillow on one of several couches in the house. She has just recently ventured to the kids' bedrooms upstairs....she even slept up in Michael's room one night. Molly is now starting to greet us at the door when we come home from work. I think she knows it means dinner will be served soon.
We took her to our vet on 12/23 for her sutures to be removed and for a wellness check-up. She is 20 lbs. and in good health. We were feeding Molly the same amount we fed our previous dog but she always seemed to be looking for food. It turns out we were definitely on the light side. The vet worked out how much she should get based on her weight and we have since made the adjustment. Molly was very happy about that. She knows where we store the treats and we have to make sure the door is shut when we aren't home so she doesn't have a field day. The most noticeable thing that needs to be taken care of is dental work. She is scheduled to have her teeth cleaned and needs several extractions in mid-Jan. We are very happy to have Molly as a member of our family.
I will send you some pictures as soon as I can transfer some to my computer. Thanks for steering us towards Molly.....she is an absolute pleasure to have around. We will keep in touch.
Happy New Year!!
Frank & Rose Angeloni
We went to Petco to get something for the fish aquarium and ended up with a dog! Annie was a rescue puppy, and has fit right in! Koda and she are right now wearing a path in the carpet, running back and forth chasing each other! I can say neither of them are the least bit bored!
Cole also got a hamster for Christmas (courtesy of Nanette) so, as she has put it, we now have the Faires Farm !

We adopted Sophie (right) to keep our Scrappy (left) company. They love each other! They have such fun together. She is a sweet girl. We are really happy that Sophie is part of our family!

I thought it would be nice to give you an update on Rosie-Girl. We adopted her on Wednesday, Dec. 3rd and brought her home to Roscoe. I think you were very right and having another dog here has helped her come out of her shell quickly.
While she is still nervous, especially of the sounds in the house, she is getting accustomed to our routine and shows a great willingness to come and be petted. Every day she comes a little closer to us when we are sitting in the living room.
Rosie's great joy is the back yard where she and Roscoe run and play together. Really, it started yesterday and she chased him and the toy he had every time they went out. Today they are wrestling and playing tug. It is hard to get her to come back inside where the noises are. But we are working on that.
The attached pictures are from the first day we had Rosie at home. She and Roscoe hit it off immediately, as you can see. (Roscoe is on the left) When they are playing it is hard to tell who is who - they are the same size and coloring.
Thank you for encouraging us to take Rosie-Girl. She is going to be a wonderful addition to our family.

It's been almost two months since my new famiy members arrived so I wanted to check in. I'm not exagerating when I say EVERYone LOOOOOOOVES Wrangler!!! He is so social and looks at everyone/thing as a potential friend (I think he has more friends than I do -they love the Ridgeback mix in him). He is a riot!! (and a cuddler) We have joined a doggie meet up group and have gone for a hike in the woods, to the beach and play a lot at the doggie park. I've attached a couple pictures of him and some of his new NH life.
Georgia (aka Carol) is fitting right in. She gets spurts of kitten where she runs spastically through the house and attacks Wrangler and other times where I wake up and she is perfectly content sleeping ON me :) Here are a couple pics of her too.
Thanks so much for the additions you have given me!
Colleen (Wrangler, Georgia, Funkee, Kimba and Catchem)
